Dredg

Dredg (styled as dredg) is an American progressive/alternative rock band formed in 1993 in Los Gatos, California. The band consists of vocalist Gavin Hayes, guitarist Mark Engles, bassist Drew Roulette and drummer/keyboardist Dino Campanella. With Hayes and Roulette enjoying art as a hobby, the band has consistently incorporated art, and painting in particular, into their albums and concerts. [1]

The band established themselves in the indie scene with their 1998 release of the concept album Leitmotif, landing them a deal with Interscope Records. Dredg released El Cielo in 2002, Catch Without Arms in 2005, and The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion in 2009.

History

Early years (1993-1997)

While attending middle school in Los Gatos, California, Engles and Campanella started playing music together. After Engles and Campanella graduated to Los Gatos High School, older friends Hayes and Roulette joined the group.

The name Dredg may have come from the English word dredge, which in its verbal usage means to unearth or widen/deepen a river or channel; dredge is also the name of the device used to perform this function. In 2005, Campanella added, "It was so long ago that we named it I can't even remember. Honestly, we don't even like the name anymore. We mostly don't like the way it sounds. It doesn't roll off the tongue well."

In 1996, Dredg recorded and released their first demos of original material, the Conscious EP, garnering them exposure as far away as Boston.[2] Currently, very little information has ever been released about these demos. In 1997, they released what would become the early stages of their musical transition, the Orph EP. While the EP shows their nu metal upbringings, it includes the group's first instrumental track, "Orph". Additionally, the track "Kayasuma" shares its title with the name of the shaman in Leitmotif's liner notes for "Lechium".[5] With the release, Dredg slowly built a name for themselves in the Bay Area, as well as on the East Coast, such as in Boston and New York.[2]

Leitmotif (1999-2001)

In 1999, Dredg released their first full-length, Leitmotif. The album was independently released in May 1999. Leitmotif was a concept album about a man traveling the world to cure his moral disease. The story was included in the liner notes, in lieu of the actual lyrics. Written by Roulette, the band had planned to release a movie of the story;however, upon the death of the lead actor, the project was scrapped.

Over the next two years, Dredg toured mostly within California, slowly expanding their fan base. The band began sending out a demo tape to several labels with four new songs intended for their next album, "Of the Room", "Redrawing the Island Map", "Running Through Propellers" and "The Papal Insignia". In February 2001, Dredg was offered a deal by Interscope Records. As part of the deal, Leitmotif was re-released by Interscope on September 11 2001.

With the re-release of Leitmotif, Dredg toured nationally and internationally in support of the record with bands such as Alien Ant Farm, Pressure 4-5, The Apex Theory, Taproot, Deadsy and Onesidezero.

El Cielo (2002-2004)

After signing to Interscope Records, the band began work on their major label debut, El Cielo. Like its predecessor, El Cielo was a concept album. Initially intended to revolve around Salvador Dali's Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate One Second Before Awakening, the band expanded the focus to include sleep paralysis after learning of Dali's own influences. As they had done with the liner notes of Leitmotif, Dredg chose not to include the lyrics; instead, they printed letters sent to them by people suffering from sleep paralysis. Several songs on the album even included lyrics taken directly from the letters.

When the band began writing material for the new album, they secluded themselves in the deserts around Palm Desert. The majority of the album was recorded at Skywalker Ranch. The band used three producers, Ron Saint Germain, Tim Palmer and Jim Scott, on the record, adding an additional layer of diversity to the album.[10] Completed in May 2002, the album was widely available on the internet before being released on October 8, 2002. Dredg made music videos for two of the album's tracks, "Same Ol' Road" and "Of The Room".

Upon releasing the album, the band once again returned to their hectic touring schedule, including their first national headline tour with Codeseven, a then-unsigned Strata and either STUN or Woven supporting. They also toured with acts such as Ozomatli, Deftones, Chevelle, Hoobastank and Phantom Planet, as well as earning a spot on the Sno-Core Tour with Sparta, Glassjaw and Hot Water Music.

Catch Without Arms - Live at the Fillmore (2005-2006)

Lead singer Gavin Hayes playing the slide guitar at The Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia on May 24, 2005.

While touring in support of El Cielo, Dredg began work on their third album, Catch Without Arms, spending 8 months writing material before taking another 10 months to record and mix the album.[4] Like their previous albums, Catch Without Arms was a concept album; however, differing from the concrete stories and events surrounding their earlier releases, Catch Without Arms was about opposites, mainly focused on positives and negatives.[14] Produced by Terry Date, Catch Without Arms was Dredg's most successful album, debuting at 124 on the Billboard album charts and eventually reaching the top of the Heatseekers chart.[17][18] The only single on the album, "Bug Eyes", was made into a music video directed by Philip Andelman.[14]

With the release of Catch Without Arms, Dredg began a treasure hunt based around the Bay Area. The three winners each received a painting from Catch Without Arms, as well as the opportunity to name a song for the next album, "Vague Clues and Long Days".

Dredg headlined several tours in support of Catch Without Arms, playing with bands such as Circa Survive, Day One Symphony, Delta Activity, Vedera, Ours and Ambulette. They played the Taste of Chaos tour in 2006 with Deftones, Atreyu, Thrice and Story of the Year, as well as shows with Coheed and Cambria, The Blood Brothers and MewithoutYou. Engles and Campanella also took some time to record the soundtrack for the 2005 independent film, Waterborne.

On May 11, 2006, Dredg recorded their concert in San Francisco for a live CD entitled Live at the Fillmore. Released on November 7, 2006, Live at the Fillmore contained songs from all three studio albums, as well as a new song titled "The Warbler". A remix of "Sang Real" by Dan the Automator was released with purchase of the album on iTunes.

On September 14 and 15, 2006, Dredg played two special shows at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California, playing Leitmotif and El Cielo in their entirety on separate nights. During these shows the band played songs from Catch Without Arms before diving into the full album of the night.Of note, each night they played a very early version of "It's Not Worth It" (a song that did not make it into the final album) at about the mid-point of each album. On the second night, as a segue into El Cielo, they performed an early instrumental version of "Wonderous Miracle" (another song that did not make it into the final album).

Exit from Interscope & The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion (2007-present)

Roulette and Campanella during a concert at "The Exit" in Fresno, California on April 23 2008.

On February 14 2007, Dredg issued an update indicating production had begun on their next album and released several new song titles as part of the update. Gavin Hayes posted a Myspace blog on July 8, 2007 with new information that the band had 12-15 songs that might or might not make the final cut. Of the songs previously written, only a few were being worked on from prior updates. Hayes stated that on December 21, 2007 the writing process for their new album was almost done, and they planned to enter the studio in early 2008 to start recording. This would be followed by extensive touring in the spring.[23] The songs that were played at live shows during the writing process but were not released on the album include: "Wondrous Miracle", "It's Not Worth It", "Push Away", "Holding a Remedy Potion", "Hurricane Felix", "Pieces of Gold", "Fleeing to Mexico", "2001", "MacGuffin" and "Fucking Smile Pt. 2".

The band played at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California on April 26, 2008 during their tour to introduce the new tracks to their fans, with the exception of a few past hits and some tracks already performed such as "Long Days and Vague Clues". After Coachella, Dredg released demos for songs rumored to be on their upcoming album up to February 2009. They also added a song entitled "entire new album", which was a track consisting of every song played simultaneously. Also in February 23, 2009, Dredg announced their exit from Interscope Records as well their new record's title, The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion. They confirmed joining with Independent Label Group (ILG, which is a part of Warner Music Group), and Ohlone Recordings. The album was released on June 9, 2009 with a Limited Edition release with alternate artwork (as well as a Vinyl recording) made available to the public. Music videos have been made for "Information" and "I Don't Know".

The album was inspired by the essay "Imagine There Is No Heaven: A Letter to the Six Billionth Citizen". The essay was written by British-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie, who found controversy in 1988 over one of his books gaining him a religious fatwa for Rushdie's death from Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini which ultimately resulted in United Kingdom and Iran breaking diplomatic ties to each other a year later. In consideration of the essay, the album has common themes in agnosticism and the questioning of beliefs and society. Album and liner notes artwork resembled an Air Mail letter (addressed to "SEVEN BILLIONTH") and was done by Rohner Segnitz of the band Division Day. Segue tracks on the album are called "Stamps of Origin", and unlike prior albums a few of these segue tracks contain lyrics. Hayes tells Broken Records Magazine in Volume 1 Issue 3, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall have been the most influential albums in my music.

Katy Perry doesn't want to sweat on her wedding day

The 'California Gurls' singer has decided not to wear a latex dress when she ties the knot with Russell Brand because her other rubber outfits make her very hot.

She told People: ''m definitely not going to get married in latex. When I wear latex on stage, I sweat. I could wring out those dresses ' and I don't want to do that at my wedding.'

The 25-year-old pop star has also revealed she and Russell, 35, have had to make compromises on the style of their home because she didn't want to live in a 'goth house'.

She is quoted by the Daily Mirror newspaper as saying: 'Russell's house in London was dark, gothic and quite sinister. My apartment was like Candyland, every room in a different pastel and very over the top.

'He didn't want to live in a cracked-out fairyland and I didn't want to live in a goth house, so it's a balancing act.

'We did agree to call our cat Krusty; it's a combination of our names. That was the easiest decision so far.'

Lady Gaga Brings Contagious Energy To Staples Center After a 72-hour bender of recording new songs, Gaga played at first of two L.A. sh

LOS ANGELES — Fresh from her headlining gig at Lollapalooza, Lady Gaga rolled her Monster Ball into L.A. on Wednesday night for the first of two shows at the Staples Center. Hours before the concert started, Gaga's little monsters marauded around the venue, decked out in Gaga gear. The theme for the ball may as well been a "no pants party," with fans of both sexes parading in fishnets and leotards.

It wasn't just Mother Monster's kin in attendance — Perez Hilton tweeted that Britney Spears was on hand for the show, though he said she left after a few songs. With the pop princess watching, Gaga took the stage just after 9 p.m. It was everything you would expect from a Gaga production — the sets! the costumes! the lights! — but what can't be overlooked is the energy. Gaga and her dancers gave it their all for two hours and change.

With four major set changes, 19 songs (not including the interstitial tunes) and an arching narrative throughout the show, the Monster Ball seems less of a concert than a Broadway musical at times.

The set kicked off with "Dance in the Dark," "Glitter and Grease" and "Just Dance" (the opening notes of which were played on a keyboard that was hidden under the hood of a broken down car). Gaga's first wardrobe choice of the night was a pair of oversize purple shades, a giant shoulder-padded purple jacket and a purple leopard-print leotard underneath.

After the first few songs, Gaga addressed her adoring crowd. "The Monster Ball is sexual freedom," she declared. "Tonight in Los Angeles we'll be super freaks and monsters."

And she continued her conversation with the audience throughout the night. With fans on their feet during a rousing rendition of "LoveGame" (encouraged by Gaga's "Now dance mother----ers!), she thanked them for buying tickets and supporting her. "Tonight, I want you to free yourselves, forget your insecurities."

Next up was "Boys Boys Boys," followed by a brief exit. She returned from beneath the stage on a riser to perform "Money Honey." She then took time to call a fan in the cheap seats and surprise him with tickets closer to the stage. It was a perfect segue to "Telephone," which was one of the most elaborate dance routines and biggest sing-alongs of the night.

But Gaga had to settle the crowd for at least a few minutes during the night. With her piano rising from the beneath the stage, she launched into "Speechless" — which she dedicated to her dad, who was also in attendance. Next was new tune "You and I," proving that all the she really needs is her voice and a piano.

The new song was a tease of what's yet to come. Gaga announced that she had been on a 72-hour bender of writing and recording new music. "I want to put it out tomorrow," she said, "but I can't!"

"So Happy I Could Die," "Monster" and "Teeth" kept the show moving until the climactic "Alejandro," "Poker Face" and Paparazzi." At one point, Gaga emerged in a bra and panty set that sprayed sparks from her unmentionable regions.

But the crowd's biggest eruption occurred during the encore. With the curtain still down, Gaga's familiar "oh, oh, oh-oh-oooh" broke over the speakers, and fans instantly recognized "Bad Romance." As fans roared, the curtain lifted to reveal her in a rotating sphere wearing a mirrored angular outfit. It was her 19th song of concert — with almost as many wardrobe changes — and it was finally time for Gaga to call it a night as her monsters exited the ball sweaty and satisfied.

Lord's Live Music

Up and coming bands looking for a break in the music industry are still being held back by restrictions around live music, according to Lord Clement Jones who has slammed the 2003 Licensing Act.

It's not the first time he's sought changes to the law, but the last government knocked back his proposals to abolish red tape.

Now though his original bill, with a few amendments, is back on the table.

6 Music's Adrian Larkin went to the House of Lords to get the latest from the Lib Dem Lord:

Singer Lily Allen is pregnant

Singer Lily Allen is expecting her first child with partner Sam Cooper, her spokesperson has confirmed.

The 25-year-old announced she is three months pregnant, adding they were "absolutely delighted".

It comes after Allen pulled out of a number of recent commitments, including a gig at Spanish festival Benicassim.

She has spoken openly in the past about her desire to start a family.

In January 2008 Allen suffered a miscarriage after becoming pregnant by Ed Simons, one half of dance duo the Chemical Brothers.
'More grounded'

In August's edition of Elle Magazine she said: "I don't think I'm that young to have a baby. My mother had me when she was 23.

"Having a family will give me something more solid, something that exists, that makes me feel more grounded."

Allen and Cooper, 32, have been together since summer 2009.

The news comes after Allen revealed she was going to take a break from music early in 2010, saying she would take "one or two years off".

The singer has yet to confirm how it will affect her forthcoming live commitments, including scheduled gigs at the Big Chill festival (8 August) and support slots with Muse in September.

She is also set to unveil her new clothing range, Lucy In Disguise, with her sister Sarah Owen at the Vintage Goodwood festival on 13 August.

Up to now, Allen has released two albums, Alright, Still and It's Not Me, It's You and scored number one hits with The Fear and Smile.

Everysing

CocoRosie With bipolar changes in tempo and mood throughout the song, it makes sense that "Lemonade" was composed by a sibling duo (Sierra and Blanca). The lighter moments have a Verve jazz sample vibe, while the slower parts would appeal to Portishead fans. Although this is their debut on Sub Pop, "Grey Oceans" (out 5/11) is their fourth album overall.

She Him After Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward wooed us with their debut album, they left us wondering, "Was that just a one night stand, or do they really love us?" With "Volume Two", we're starting to believe this could be a long-term relationship. After only a few songs deep, you'll forget you're listening to a movie star and be swept away by timeless, alt-country meets indie-pop harmonies.

Download: She Him "In The Sun"

Mimicking Birds What appears to be a mellow Modest Mouse side project is, actually, almost that. The new Portland-based indie-folk trio, Mimicking Birds, is produced by Isaac Brock (lead singer Nate Lacy even has the same trembling vocal style as Brock). You can listen to their entire debut album on their website and sign-up for the email list to get the free MP3.

Download: Mimicking Birds "Burning Stars"

Blitzen Trapper Unless the rest of the album is filled with beat-less piano ballads, "Heaven Earth" may be an odd choice for the kick-off "single." But Blitzen Trapper (and their label Sub Pop) are known for playing by their own rules. Eric Earley's timeless melodies keep singing/songwriting alive and leave us anxiously wondering what the rest of "Destroyer of the Void" (out 6/ will sound like.

Sia While Sia Furler prepares for "The We Meaning You Tour" this spring, we're warming up with her dance floor jam, "You've Changed." She's going coast-to-coast with some impressive stops such as playing the Coachella festival. As her catalog expands on "Some People Have Real Problems" and her hit single "Breathe Me" (from Six Feet Under), Sia's new dance vibe is perfect for upbeat, like-minded party people.

Sia "You've Changed"

A Weather As Kings of Convenience once proclaimed, "quiet is the new loud," A Weather would have to agree with their sophomore effort Everyday Balloons. Although their hushed harmonies are low in volume, the new material is actually peppier than their debut "Cove." Yes it's sleepy, but that's intended (and that's what we like about it). The featured song "Giant Stars," which appears late in the album, is now available on Team Love Records.

Ciara Pushes the Envelope on 'Basic Instincts'

After Ciara's 2009 album "Fantasy Ride" failed to meet expectations -- selling a meager 195,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan -- following the success of 2006's "Ciara: The Evolution," which sold 1.3 million copies, and her "Goodies" debut, which sold 2.7 million -- many counted her out.
But with the help of lead single "Ride" from "Basic Instincts," her fourth studio album due Oct. 5 on Jive Records, the R&B singer/dancer/actress is back with a vengeance.
The single, produced by Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and written by the-Dream -- who together helmed the entire album -- is No. 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 after 13 weeks on each. The track has sold 250,000 downloads to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"The track has caught on because it's infectious, memorable and returns Ciara to her fan base," Stewart says. "The last album we had a number of people in our ears not believing in our vision. This time Ciara drew the line and really fought for what she believed in."
Another reason: Sex sells. Ciara takes that adage a step further than she did on her "Love Sex Magic" song and video with Justin Timberlake from her last album. Her limber writhing in a bodysuit in the videoclip seems demure compared with "Ride." The highly sexified, push-the-envelope track finds Ciara boasting about her sexual prowess ("I can do it up and down, I can do circles/To him I'm a gymnast, this room is my circus," she sings in a breathy tenor) atop a thumping, slinky beat.
The accompanying video, directed by Diane Martel, is just as explicit as the lyrics. The clip features Ciara provocatively gliding and bouncing atop a mechanical bull while wearing a wet T-shirt, among other highly sexualized visuals -- so much so that BET Networks banned the video from its channel.
"Ride" isn't the only promising track gleaned from "Basic Instinct" so far; "Gimme Dat," a more uptempo but equally brash song was released as a buzz track. "I've been gone for too long, now it's time I take it back," she confidently opens the song over a lively, bass-driven dance beat. Additionally, a remix to "Ride," featuring OutKast rapper André 3000, was released on the Internet.
While Ciara's album was pushed back a number of times and an official second single hasn't been released yet, her recent chart successes have many rooting for her and the future of her music career. "I am grateful to work with such a talented artist as Ciara," the-Dream tells Billboard. "I've never doubted her talents or her will to succeed."

Top Rock Songs of 2010

10 'Splinter' Sevendust
Despite the welcomed return of guitarist Clint Lowery after a six year absence, this veteran alternative metal band reported that sessions for their eighth studio record were harder than any previous album, due to various personal issues. They certainly are exorcising some demons on this track, angrily demanding that a former lover cut them completely out of their lives.

09 'Fever'Bullet for My Valentine
The title track from the 2010 album of the same name finds lead singer Matt Tuck leading his fellow heavy metal loving Welshman in hot pursuit of a girl who's got him feeling feverish. The track builds speed as his thoughts get less and less rational, to the point where he's ready to trade everything for a girl he hasn't even met.

08 'Awake and Alive' Skillet
This 2010 top rock single features an anthemic, stirring, symphonic sound. Lyrically, the Memphis-based Christian band energize their fans while reminding them it's up to them to remain awake and alive, even when others are pressuring them to feel as though things are out of their control.

07 'No One Gets Left Behind' Five Finger Death Punch
The fourth single from the Los Angeles-based hard rock band's album 'War Is the Answer' takes military leaders to task for treating human lives like pieces on a board game. What happened, they ask, to the long-standing promise to never needlessly put a soldier in harm's way?

06 'The Good Life'Three Days Grace
After nearly five years of non-stop touring, these Canadian hard rockers took a break and returned to their family lives for a quick breather. This pause clearly influenced the theme of the their album 'Life Starts Now,' particularly the second single, 'The Good Life,' which revels in the simple pleasures of home.

05 'Lights Out' Breaking Benjamin
Quite hard to tell if the protagonist from the third straight top rock song off last year's 'Dear Agony' is real or a figment of someone's imagination. The lyrics are either about a monster, determined to punish people who haven't lived up to their potential, or, possibly, the manifestation of an extremely powerful wave of self-doubt that attacks when the lights go out at night.

04 'Nightmare' Avenged Sevenfold
Lead singer M. Shadows happily welcomes an evildoer to his new digs -- either hell or a mental home, hard to tell. He gives a full rundown of the pain that awaits on the churning verses, then uses the deceptively angelic, soaring choruses to remind the villain that their arrival is, well, their own fault.

03 'Crying Like a Bitch' Godsmack
With one song, Godsmack songwriter Sully Ema manages to take a rock star AND a football hero down a few notches. Without revealing names, he's admitted the song is about diva-like behavior from another musician who Sully toured with recently. But the song's title came about after the longtime Raiders fan watched rival Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers cry after a loss.

02 'Another Way to Die' Disturbed
The anti-pollution message of Disturbed's first single from their upcoming 2010 album 'Asylum' couldn't be more timely, in light of the Gulf of Mexico's recent environmental disaster. The song's tightly coiled, urgent musical delivery gives the message even more weight. Too bad heavy metal can't plug a leaky well.

01 'Bad Company' Five Finger Death Punch
Five Finger Death Punch make their second appearance on our top rock song countdown, recording a studio version of Bad Company's self-mythologizing and self-titled anthem, after performing it in concert for years. Naturally, these war-obsessed metalheads ramp up the stakes both musically and lyrically.

Seven doctors who treated the late Michael Jackson will not be charged in the singer's death. According to The Associated Press California officials said Wednesday (July 28) that they will not file charges against the doctors who were under scrutiny as part of an investigation launched by the state's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

Jackson passed away in June 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest. His personal doctor Conrad Murray — who was not one of the seven doctors included in the investigation — has been charged in his death and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter after allegedly giving the star the potent anesthetic propofol.

"I am very disappointed," said Brian Oxman, an attorney for Michael Jackson's father Joe Jackson. "The misuse of medications by Michael Jackson in the last years of his life was excessive and to fail to bring that to the public eye is ignoring reality." Oxman is serving as Joe Jackson's lawyer in a wrongful death suit against Murray.

Bureau spokesperson Christine Gasparac told the AP that one of the doctors who was under investigation was referred to the California Medical Board for prescribing drugs to one of Jackson's aliases, however, a spokesperson for the board did not confirm the referral. A spokesperson for the Drug Enforcement Agency told the AP that it has also dropped its investigation into Jackson's doctors.

Murray lawyer Ed Chernoff has maintained that the doctor did not administer a fatal dose of propofol and has suggested that either Jackson gave himself the anesthetic or another person may have supplied the late star with the dose. However, an anesthesia expert has said the possibility of Jackson administering the drug himself is unlikely.

A preliminary hearing in the Jackson manslaughter case is slated for August and Murray faces a sentence of up to four years in jail.

There's going to be robots, big screens, big lights, and some blood -- and that's exactly what's been put to film for 'Mars Needs Women.' It was a four-year wait for Zombie to follow up 'Educated Horses' with 'Hellbilly Deluxe 2,' but for those that slept on the album or just wanted more virtually right now, Sept. 28 is the date to remember, because 'Hellbilly Deluxe 2' is getting the special edition CD/DVD roll out featuring three new songs, a re-imagining of 'The Man Who Laughs ' and the 30-minute tour documentary, 'Transylvanian Transmissions.'
Adorned with a more living-dead-looking cover this time (and a 32 page booklet) the new cuts feature Zombie backed by guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D and Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison. Rick Ross Wants To Take His Music To The 'Next Level' With Dr. Dre

Rick Ross has made "Maybach Music" with Jay-Z and "Aston Martin Music" with Drake and all kinds of numbers in between with a who's who list of talent. But the Miami rap titan still has a checklist of artists he would like to work with in the future, ranging from an iconic rap producer to a legendary soul singer.

During his appearance Friday (July 23) on our inaugural "RapFix Live" broadcast, Ross revealed that he hopes to get in the studio with Dr. Dre or Frankie Beverly for his Teflon Don follow-up.

"I look forward to going to the next level, so hopefully on the next album, you might see a Dr. Dre collaboration or you might see a Frankie Beverly collaboration," Ross told Sway. "I'm a player with this."

The Bawse hasn't connected with Dre yet, but he made sure to let his wishes be known. "I'm putting it in the air right now," Ross said of the collaboration.

Next up, Ross will start production on the video for "Live Fast, Die Young," his single with Kanye West. The Def Jam star told MTV News earlier this week that he secured Hype Williams as the director of the clip, after his plans for Spike Lee to helm the shoot fell through.

"Yeah, the homie Yeezy, we decided on Hype Williams. Hype Williams will direct 'Live Fast, Die Young,' " he revealed. "Hit me up on Twitter @rickyrozay, and the reason I say that, I tweeted a picture of me and the homie Spike Lee. He came to my birthday party. I was brainstorming, like, 'We need that different vibe.' I tweeted a picture with me and the homie Spike. Ultimately, Hype will direct it. But look for Spike to do a Rozay video. I'mma be the first since [Public Enemy's] 'Fight the Power' and the other great [videos he directed back in the day]."

Katy Perry's new album will smell like marshmallows

Yes, Katy Perry's new album will smell like marshmallows.

No lie. Katy Perry's album third album (and second since her sexy secular reinvention) will be called Teenage Dream and will smell like marshmallows.

We can't stress this enough.

The twelve-track album's cover features the singer nude and wrapped in a cloud of cotton candy, much like her 'California Gurls' clip.

A press release specifies that a treatment on the packaging will make it smell like cotton candy/marshmallows. Basically, vanilla-y sugar.

The album has had an incredible start with first single 'California Gurls', featuring Snoop Dogg, topping the charts the world over.

Teenage Dream will come out on August 27. It will smell like marshmallows.

Madonna has been served with a noise abatement notice for a karaoke party at her London home

The 'Celebration' singer faces a fine of up to £5,000 after her staff threw a loud party in the exclusive Marylebone area of the UK capital, while Madonna was away.

The 51-year-old pop superstar is reportedly 'furious' about being given the official warning, which came about after angry neighbours complained to Westminster Council, and has been threatened with the huge fine should it happen again.

A friend of the singer said: "Madonna likes a good party like anyone else but she is respectful of her neighbours and doesn't like to upset anyone. She was absolutely furious when she found out."

After the complaints were lodged, officers turned up shortly after 2pm on the Sunday afternoon, spoke to partygoers through the intercom and asked them to reduce the noise.

They were refused entry to the building and were told Madonna, 51, was away.

A spokesperson for the council said: "In order to deal with the matter, a notice was served by posting it through the box at the premises. The notice was addressed to the owner or occupier at the address ordering that the noise be stopped - which it was. Any further offence could see Madonna landed with a £5,000 fine."

Madonna uses the lavish £7 million property as a family home and often stays there with her children, daughter Lourdes, 13, son Rocco, nine, and adopted kids Mercy, five, and David, four.

Eminem continues to dominate charts

Eminem's 'Recovery' album is still slaying all the competition a month after its release.

The album has been an unexpected worldwide smash hit, debuting at the top of the charts in the US, the UK, Canada, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.

The amazing thing is, four weeks after its release, it remains at the top of the US charts with sales that triple the album in the number two slot.

Recovery sold 194, 072 copies last week according to SoundScan. The number two album, Korn's comeback Korn III: Remember Who You Are selling a measly 61,704 copies in its debut week.

The album has sold over one and a half million copies in a month, and has already gone platinum in the US, Switzerland and Australia.

Pundits have speculated exactly why Recovery has been so huge, considering Relapse was a relative flop for a superstar like Em.

Most are attributing it to mainstream media appearances, such as his self-deprecating Letterman slot, his BET Awards performance, and cameos on The Soup, E!, and at press conferences with Usher, will.i.am and Rihanna.

Recovery was the fifth highest-selling album of 2010 before this most recent week, and there's little doubt that by the end of the year it will hit the top slot there too.
